Huawei Ascend P1 S Review

At CES Huawei announced their new Ascend P1 and P1 S Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphones, although the phone looks like Galaxy SII. The latter of the the phone, the P1 S they are calling the “world’s thinnest smartphone” coming in at only 6.68mm thin. The 7.1mm DROID RAZR didn’t hold the title long, and neither did that Fujitsu Arrows ES phone no one remembers.

These two devices are actually extremely similar and in the video below we actually confuse the two they are that similar. The P1 S is the black Galaxy S II looking phone and is the world’s thinnest. The regular Ascend P1 is the yellow smartphone shown off in the gallery below. What is the difference you ask? Nothing. The Huawei Ascend P1 will be slightly thicker than the P1 S and will cost a few dollars less for those that don’t want to spend the extra dough.

The Design

The device is super-thin at 6.48mm, which makes it a thinnest dual-core smartphone than rival skinny smart phone such as Motorola Razr or Samsung Galaxy S 2. The phone feels slender, the textured plastic casing lacks the outright luxury of the iPhone’s metallic finish – it’s very similar in feel to the Samsung Galaxy S II – but it still has the feel of a high-end handset.

The Display

The device has a resolution of 960x540 pixels, our first impression suggests it’s not the sharpest we’ve seen (nor, in fact, the brightest) but it’s certainly no slouch.’ With the 4.3-inch Super AMOLED thinnest Gorilla Glass (0.55mm) display as being ‘as bright and beautiful as you'd expect,’ while The inquirer said the display ‘delivers a sharp, clear picture’. The phone has a plasticky feeling in the hands, looks gorgeous and appears solid, with a metallic frame running around the edge of the device

Camera

The Ascend P1 S boasts an 8-megapixel camera, a Super AMOLED display, you will be able to take several high quality pictures and  there's a 1.3-megapixel camera on the front for video calls too, capable of 720p capture and capable of 1080p HD video.

Engine Room

The Ascend P1 S’s high-end spec line-up, which includes a 1.5GHz dual core ARM Cortex A9 processor running a TI OMAP 4460 chipset. Huawei has chosen to go with Texas Instruments processor rather than an Nvidia-based chip

Software

P1S is running Google latest Android (Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich), It's based around multiple home screens that you can fill with shortcuts to your favourite apps, and widgets that update themselves automatically to show you useful information from the weather to your latest messages to your friends' latest social networks updates.

Apps are downloaded from the Android App Market, over Wi-Fi, and allow you to do specific tasks. There's a vast range of Android apps that do just about everything you can think of and more, although it's not regulated like Apple's iPhone App Store, so there's no guarantee of quality.

Storage & Connectivity

The divice is boasting with 1GB of RAM, P1 S  comes with only 4GB of onboard storage, which is a bit disappointing , however the device comes with  SD card slot which you can extended the storage with addition 32GB. The phone connect to the web and other devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and DLNA. One clever feature is the MHL-HDMI socket: that's one plug for either HDMI or micro-USB cable. You can charge by either type of connection.

Battery

Huawei is confident it will be able to differentiate its device is battery performance.

It claims that the 1670mAh battery will give 30 per cent better performance than other high-end devices and it will be interesting to see how long the handset lasts when compared to other smartphones with similar specifications.
